Statistics on murders and abductions during January – February 2008

The situation in the Chechen Republic during the period of end of January - end of February of 2008 still remained quite unstable. As well as before, cases of clashes between employees of power departments and groups of insurgents, arrests and detentions of citizens under various pretexts, the fact of infringements of rights and freedom of a person, as beatings and tortures of the detained citizens, still take place.

The situation in Ingushetia is also quite serious. The cases of attack on representatives of power departments and authorities continue to be recorded in the republic. Prosecutions of participants of the mass meeting taken place on 26th of January in the center of Nazran still continue to proceed. Several participants of the meeting, as well as one of its organizers, the businessman Maksharip Aushev, who was taken by law enforcers to in Nalchik (Kabardino-Balkariya), are in prison. 

According to the information, received by the Information center for CNO and published in our information releases, at the end of January - February of the current year on the territory of the Chechen Republic under various circumstances, at least, seven people are killed and disappeared. Among them are four participants of armed formations, two women and one employee of law enforcement bodies.

During the same period in Ingushetia four persons, including two employees of law enforcement bodies and one insurgent (who found killed in the vicinity of one of the settlements), are killed.

Employees of power structures detained and arrested not less than 33 people in various districts of the Chechen Republic, including two women, on suspicion in fulfillment of various crimes. The part of the detainees, according to the available information, was released later. Some of them were obliged to come to militia on the short notice.

In Ingushetia four persons were detained on charge in fulfillment of various crimes.

In February in the Chechen Republic (in the city of Grozny) a young girl has disappeared under the obscure circumstances.

Besides, during the same period four attacks on workers of law-enforcement structures was recorded in the Chechen Republic.

In the neighboring Ingushetia 13 attacks of unknown persons on employees of power departments and officials of various level are registered.
