Statistics on murders and abductions, end of May - June 2008

In May - June of the current year the situation in the Chechen Republic remained quite complicated and tense. Murders, abductions, unauthorized arrests and detention of citizens, beatings and tortures in places of the imprisonment, arbitrariness of employees of different power departments towards the population of the republic, are still widespread phenomenon. Periodically in mountain and foothill parts of the republic armed conflicts and cross firings between law enforcers and participants of armed resistance, attacks on militaries and employees of various power structures have occurred.

Several weeks ago it became known that in Leninski district of the city of Grozny, there is probably a mass grave, in which there can be remains of, at least, 800 persons, victims of air and artillery strikes in Grozny as well as victims of extrajudicial punishments of militaries during the first military campaign in the Chechen Republic. However, the works on exhumation and reburial of remains has not started so far.

In the neighboring Ingushetia, cases of murders and attacks on representatives of power structures are also frequent. Thus, it is necessary to note that actually none of criminals was detained "hot on the heels".

According to the information, received by the Information center for CNO and published in our information releases, during the period of end of May and over June of 2008, in the Chechen Republic:

21 persons (including 8 employees of power departments and a five-years child) were killed.

12 persons, (among which 4 employees of militia and a woman) are killed in the neighboring Ingushetia.

Besides, in Gudermes district of the Chechen Republic several mass graves with remains of 8 people were revealed. One more mass grave, with remains of several hundreds citizens, presumably, is in Leninski district of the city of Grozny.

18 persons were detained during the same period of time in various areas of the Chechen Republic on suspicion in fulfillment of different crimes. Some of them were released later.

About 13 sorties of insurgents and attacks on employees of various power departments occurred in the Chechen Republic in May-June.
