Statistics on murders and abductions for January 2008

Since the end of December of 2007 until the end of January 2008 the situation on the territory of the Chechen Republic has not undergone any significant changes and remains complex. A splash in activity of militants is observed at the beginning of the month. Only during two weeks of January there were several clashes between employees of power structures and groups of militants in the mountain and foothill areas of the republic. Thus, both sides have got victims.

The situation in the neighboring Ingushetia remains quite serious. A number of attacks on law enforcers are registered as well. The most resonant event of January in Ingushetia became dispersal of participants of the rally, which took place on the 26th of January in the center of Nazran. During dispersal of the meeting employees of the Ingush OMON used weapons. Tens of people, including representatives of Russian mass-media and the human rights center "Memorial" have been detained. Some participants of the protest action have been beaten by "observers of law and order".

According to the information, received by the Information centre for CNO and published in our information releases, at the end of December - the beginning of January of the current year on the territory of the Chechen Republic, at least, 16 persons are killed and disappeared in unknown circumstances. Among them are 5 employees of power departments and 8 participants of the armed formations (one girl).

During the same period in Ingushetia 8 persons, including 4 employees of law enforcement bodies, are killed.

On suspicion in fulfillment of various crimes employees of power structures detained and arrested about 49 persons in various areas of the Chechen Republic. There were two women among them. Some of detainees, according to the available information, were released later. Many of them were obliged to come to militia on the short notice.

In Ingushetia one person has been detained on charge in fulfillment of unknown crimes and suspicion in belonging to militants.

During the reporting period two persons disappeared in unknown circumstances in the Chechen Republic. One of the disappeared persons is a young girl. 

In Ingushetia unidentified persons detained two persons.

Besides, during the same period about six clashes between militants and employees of power structures and attacks on workers of law-enforcement structures are registered on the territory of the Chechen Republic.

In the neighboring Ingushetia four attacks on law enforcers are accomplished.
